Separating a full head of garlic is not fun. Sometimes you’re lucky and you don’t stab yourself with the root. Other times you manage to evade sticking your knife – or fingernail – into the flesh of the clove. Then there are the times that you say “forget it” and use the jarred pre-minced garlic.
Wait. No. Please. Don’t do that. I’m not positive, but I think that might be formaldehyde inside the jar. Just sayin’.
Thankfully, there is a better way.
To separate a full head of garlic into cloves ~
Place the garlic on a clean, hard flat surface, such as the counter or cutting board.
Flip the garlic bulb over, so that the point is facing down.
Place the palm of your hand over the center of the bulb and push, moving in a slightly circular rocking motion.
Keeping pushing until you feel the bulb split apart.
Flip the bulb back over and pull out the loose skin, gently pulling apart any cloves that are still connected.
There you have it! No poking, proding or stabbing. Just a little push. Works for me!

Ooh! I think you may have just changed my life! I love garlic, but I do sometimes have that problem you’ve described…always when I am in a hurry to get the garlic added to something that’s about to start burning….
